Speak Saturdays: Mental Health Awareness

Before I begin my series on black women and fibroids, I want to take a moment and speak on mental health.

The month of May has been designated as Mental Health Awareness Month. Over the course of the past few weeks, I have read several stories of young people who have taken their lives. Death by suicide is happening at an alarming rate.

Depression is hard to spot and people are good at hiding it. If you are feeling depressed, please don’t be ashamed to reach out to a therapist. There is nothing wrong with therapy. It’s an amazing tool when used properly.

If someone shares with you about their depression or anxiety, don’t take the conversation lightly. Really take time to listen. And if listening overwhelms you, be honest about it and offer up other resources for that person to talk to someone.

Remember you don’t have to fight mental illness alone.

Happy Saturday!!
