The simplest definition of leadership is influencing others to do something while working towards a common goal or agenda. In 2022, I’m focusing on becoming a better leader in all areas of my life. As I grow, I’m sharing lessons and stories along the way. Thanks for tuning in and I hope something I share resonates with you in your leadership (influence) journey.
Recently, one of my teen daughters gave my 8-year old son one of their older AirPods. He was so excited and took them to school to use with his Chromebook. They lasted two days! He accidentally threw them away with his cafeteria tray. There are times when it may appear that someone is ready and responsible enough to handle a task or project but their actions prove they are not. A valuable leadership lesson is knowing when you (or others) are ready to handle something. As ready as my son thought he was to keep up with AirPods, he wasn’t ready.
It reminds me of the story I’ve heard that you can’t give a child the keys to drive a car. They are not mature enough to handle the skills needed nor mature enough to handle the freedom. Use wisdom and discernment in deciding who can handle a task. Resist the urge to get frustrated with those who just simply aren’t ready. Be willing to step in and empower them so they can grow and develop.
