I, Too

I, too, dream Arkansas.

I am the invisible sister.
They send me to walk the colored line
When objectors sound,
But I smile,
And cash my check,
And I plan.

Tomorrow,
I’ll step into the room
Where big decisions are made.
Nobody’ll try to
Say to me,
“You don’t belong here,”
Then.

Besides,
They’ll see how much need each other
And be ashamed they kept me away so long—

I, too, am Arkansan.
