The educator in me just can not resist a chance to challenge people to think deeply about how we are all connected. Many people view February as THE time to briefly explore the histories of Americans directly descended from over 12 million Africans forcibly imported to the Americas via the Transatlantic Slave Trade from the 1400s up until the late 1800s.
For a long time I resented that quelling of my history until I began to realize that no one can stop me from exploring the richness of my culture and origins. Thus began my personal crusade to us February as an amplifier rather than a limited run on black history.
This year I choose to focus on those who are MAKING BLACK HISTORY MOMENTS to highlight recent first and instances of black excellence that do not garner the same amount of attention as other world events and accomplishments. I hope you enjoy this year’s project and more importantly, that it will encourage you to research and explore the amazing accomplishments of black Americans that should, and hopefully one day will, be honored alongside our other countrymen.
