November always has a tinge of sadness for me. The year was 2003 and I lost my road dawg, Dorothy Lee Jenkins Mitchell. I was the grand child that was always attached to her. Her death was so unexpected. When I play the memories back leading up to it, I see moments when she tries to give me heads up but I wasn’t paying attention to them. My granny was loved by those in our community. This time of year she would be working hard making rolls for everyone to pick up for their Thanksgiving dinner. Listen, these rolls were a major fundraiser for the Head Start Center. My granny was sassy and truly had no filter. If you want to know where my “tell like it is attitude” come from then wonder no more.
Tomorrow will be Florida’s (her family nickname) 79th heavenly birthday. I plan to use this day to reflect on some awesome memories of her. To have self reflective moments on how I can better myself. To love on my family from afar.
Happy birthday Granny. There is not a day that goes by that I don’t think about you.
Happy Saturday!
