On March 1, 2019, I received a call from my daughter which in itself isn’t really that unusual because we talk nearly every day. This particular call was different as she excitedly relayed to me some incredible news.
“Mama,” she said, “You will NOT believe what movie is coming out today on Netflix!!!!!” She forwarded me the link and my excitement grew to match her level.
You see, I first encountered the picture book edition of William Kamkwamba’s story several years ago in the course of my children’s book hunting and fell in love with the experience of peeking into his world. I have a deep love and affinity for well written and beautifully illustrated children’s books. I have spent much of my life working to promote and encourage the use of these books in getting and keeping early learners excited about reading. It didn’t hurt at all that Chiwetel Ejiofor, an actor that I greatly admire, directed and starred in the film.
My interest in these types of stories that increase opportunities for representation early in the life of children led me to begin sharing these types of books through something I call Dr. Marta’s Read Treats which I launched in Summer of 2016.
Dr. Marta’s Read Treat Launch in Summer 2016
The Boy Who Harnessed The Wind was one of the early read treats I curated because I kept hearing parents say that they couldn’t find books that reflected the true diversity of the world in their local bookstores or online.
Dr. Marta’s Read Treat #2 for The Boy Who Harnessed The Wind
I know that I am not the first person to curate children’s book lists and make recommendations, but one of the things that I feel makes my read treats stand out is that I provide my personal insights on these amazing stories and provide parents and early childhood educators with guidance on how to enhance the learning potential that lies between each and every storybook page. (FYI, The Boy Who Harnessed The Wind is available for purchase on Amazon at THIS link.)
That leads me to my exciting news for today. Dr. Marta’s Read Treats are coming back bigger and better than ever for all of our Patreon Subscribers.
