Transformative Thursdays: The Thought Connection

thought

One day, someone told me that one of the books I wrote did not help them and wasn’t what they had expected.  My interpretation was it was a waste of their money and they were disappointed with their purchase.  My first thought was disappointment and how could they say that.  At that moment, I was presented with the opportunity to become offended, hurt, rejected, discouraged, insecure and bitter.  I quickly made a quality decision to dismiss the thought without dismissing the person.  I knew the intentions were good so I had to make a choice not to allow that thought to take residence in my mind.  And even if the intentions were bad, I still could rise above it by not dwelling on it and giving it any of my energy.

Everyday, we are bombarded by thoughts. Good thoughts. Strange thoughts. Negative thoughts. Scary thoughts. Creative thoughts. What do we do with those thoughts?

If they are good thoughts, hopefully we dwell on those and hold on to them because whatever we think on will eventually happen. If they are negative or scary thoughts, we must learn how to capture, control and conquer them. Every negative thought can be replaced with a positive thought. Of course, it takes a lot of discipline and training, but it can be done, as I have learned.

Mahatma Gandhi said,

“Carefully watch your thoughts, for they become your words. Manage and watch your words, for they will become your actions. Consider and judge your actions, for they have become your habits. Acknowledge and watch your habits, for they shall become your values. Understand and embrace your values, for they become your destiny.”

Your thoughts really do have power and they lead to the choices you make which ultimately shape your destiny.

There are three things you can do to make sure you are shaping your destiny in the way you want to go. Your goals will only be achieved to the degree you are able to capture, control and conquer your thoughts.

Capture – Once a thought comes to your mind, determine if it’s a positive or negative one. Is it something you want to happen or not? Reel it in and quickly assess its root.

Control – Once you’ve assessed the thought and put it in your positive or negative box, begin to meditate on the positive ones and get rid of the negative thoughts. Put a figurative lid on the negative box and burn it.

Conquer – We have the ability to act on each thought. You can conquer negative thoughts by throwing them away and dismissing them. Don’t allow your mind to rehash it, think it over or stay in that state of mind. You can conquer positive thoughts by meditating on them long enough so they become part of your normal, daily processing. Eventually, your actions will follow and you’ll see changes.

The moral of the story is you can do or become whatever you allow your mind to think is possible. Pull out your positive box and begin thinking of all the possibilities at your disposal and then allow your actions to follow.
