American History For Morons

Every time I leave the mainland and spend time in the Caribbean I enter the Danger Zone.

I mean, waking up to this everyday can make living landlocked in the mainland seem pale in comparison.

There is something about being around my island family that also lowers my tolerance for BS.

One particular night I just couldn’t get to sleep. Maybe it was the rain that blew through and flooded the island disrupting my internal clock. Or maybe it was the fact that we just survived another national election. Or perhaps it was the time zone bandit that ran off with my sleep. I don’t know. What I do know is that I ended up logging onto Netflix and immediately saw John Leguizamo’s Latin History for Morons Special. So, I hit play cause what the heck, I freakin love John Leguizamo’s Work AND this most recent election really does call for taking some time out to laugh to keep from going to the bad place.

So, I am watching this special and somewhere around the three minute mark I realize that this is not about to be funny insomuch as it is about to be a true and proper WAKE UP therapy session for Latinos and other marginalized communities working to survive the current political climate.

This show blessed my spirit and made me wanna go sucker punch anyone who has had the bad taste to erase the history of “minorities” from our history textbooks. And at the risk of getting political…

American History should include ALL Americans, but especially those who were here BEFORE the European colonizers.

Then I thought, what if there was a social media project where people could add an American History fact that they didn’t learn in school.

Would you following something like that? I know I would.
