One of my greatest joys is hearing from students I’ve had the opportunity to mentor. Every now and then, a mentee will share a story of his/her success and echo the words I shared with them years ago. At the time I shared those words of advice, I wondered if they were even listening. But years later, I realized they got it. They were listening, and I had influence on them.
Each of us is given a gift of influence. There are people around us that notice what we do and say. We don’t have to have a lot of money or a fancy title to have influence. Someone is always watching us. I sat through a presentation on using our influence for good and was reminded, we have all been given that gift. There are numerous opportunities each day to share a positive thought, make someone laugh, make a wise recommendation that adds value to someone’s life. It doesn’t even have to be something overly obvious—it just exudes from who we are. I don’t have to tell someone that I care about them if I surprise them with their favorite cup of coffee. My actions will reveal what is in my heart.
Influence is leaving a positive impact on others through every interaction we have. How are you using the influence you have? What impact are you making through every day conversations?
