FUNKADELIC FRIDAY: Attempting Clarity

“Dad.  Have you ever had one of those days when it seems like no matter how you try, people just don’t understand what you are trying to say?”

“What do you mean son?”

“I mean, like, when you are trying to understand EVERYTHING that is being said around you but you just don’t get it so you ask questions but no one can understand what you are asking.”

“I’m still not getting your question son.  Be a little more specific?  Give me an example?”

“Like, people will say something to you and you just don’t understand what they mean and when you need them to break it down what they are trying to get you to understand, they still talk over your head?”

“Yes.”

“So . . . how do I deal with it?”

“Deal with what?”

“Never mind.”

“Son. I answered your question.  Most of the time I don’t understand what your generation is saying but like you, I ask questions until I can get some kind of understanding but even then, I sometimes miss the mark. Understand?”

“Why didn’t you just say yes and give an example?”

“I did give you an answer and an example.  Besides, it was more fun for me this way.”

“This is why as ask Mom questions.  She gets to the point.”

This father was trying to let his son know that he understood what it meant to be frustrated and not always understand what is being said around him or even to him at times so in order to understand, he continues to ask questions until understanding is achieved.  The problem is, the “hamster wheel” answer/example does not always work.  Don’t try to be Yoda or some type of Spiritual Kung Fu Master espousing wisdom.  Bring it straight when talking to our children.  They need to know that they can come to at least one person and believe that this person “gets” them.
