Transformative Thursdays: Perseverance

During a lunch bible study a couple months ago, we were challenged to ask the Lord for our “one word” for the year.  This would be a word that we would hold on to and reflect upon throughout 2018.  It would be a word given to us by the Lord as a reminder of what He is doing in our lives.  I thought about it for a few seconds and whispered a short prayer.  Within moments, my one word came to me—PERSEVERANCE.

I have many goals and projects I am working on this year.  Because I am driven to succeed in everything I do, I expect to see things happen quickly.  It’s easy to stay the course when things are falling into line and you’re making daily progress.  But when you get that first “no” or a friend says something discouraging it can be a challenge to keep going.  When I received the word ‘perseverance’ I knew I was in for a year in which I would have to press my way and motivate myself not to give up.

We all face those times when it seems easier to throw in the towel or to scrap our goals and start over.  But there’s something about persevering that reveals strength and character.  When we come out on the other side, regardless of it taking 3 months or 3 years, we are stronger, more resilient and better equipped for success.  Success lies in completing the process and not just in the progress.  It’s revealed in the moments we walk through the valleys.  It’s revealed in the seasons when it seems as if nothing is happening.

I can remember the races I’ve run over the years and with each one, I had to tell myself to put one foot in front of the other.  At mile 18 of the 26.2 mile marathon when every part of my body said QUIT, I told myself to put one foot in front of the other.  And that mindset and corresponding action propelled me to the finish line.  I persevered!

Are there areas in which you have given up too soon?  Have you stopped believing in yourself and in your dreams?  Do you need to continue to put one foot in front of the other?  Take a moment and reflect on your goals and where you are.  Do you have “one word” for this year?  If so, what is it?  How does that relate to where you are at this moment?

Take the plunge and keep going.  Don’t give up because something is at work behind the scenes.  Persevere!
