Mellow Monday: For the Culture October

Happy Monday Everyone!!

I had an amazing October attending “For the Culture” events throughout Northwest Arkansas.  One must take advantage of events geared toward the African American community in Northwest Arkansas.  I wished more of “us” were in attendance but that’s another story for another day.

On October 6th, I had the opportunity to attend a performance lab at Crystal Bridges called Memoirs of A Unicorn by Marjani Forte.  This was a one woman show that told stories of her ancestors through interpretive dance.  One word describes it all:  AMAZING.  Marjani is super talented and truly thinks outside the box.  One of those memorable scenes was the washing of an audience member’s foot.  If you know your bible then you know how powerful that story is.  Marjani is such a talented dancer.  At first I thought I would be able to follow along with story but the lighting and the music and the dancing.  Goodness I am still in awe of it now a month later.

On October 15th, I saw the world premiere of “The Champion” at Theater Squared.  This play depicted an event in the life of Nina Simone.  The lead character voice was DIVINE.  And she truly embodied the essence of Nina Simone.  The lady was a musical genius who dealt with her own inner demons.  If you have an opportunity to see the play, do so.  You will not be disappointed at all.

I was supposed to attend “An Evening with Nina” on October 30th on the University of Arkansas campus but life happened and I miss the moment to here the lead from “The Champion” sing again.

Take time to submerge yourself into our culture.  The joy, enlightenment, and fulfillment you feel is so worth it.
