Say What?!? Saturday: Musical Inspiration

*sways and bobs head* Click play and feel the vibe with me…

Today’s musical inspiration is Bill Withers “Lovely Day”.

It was a beautiful sunny day, not a cloud in the sky. Sunglasses on, sunroof back and radio turned all the way up. Just me and the open road. The station was set to the oldies but goodies and “Lovely Day” started to play and I was struck by the dichotomy. It evoked both light and dark. Hope and despair. A kind of melancholy happy, if that’s an emotional cocktail that can exist.

It’s pure musical genius. The verses give way to the dark and the choruses bring you back to the light.

When I wake up in the morning, love
And the sunlight hurts my eyes
And something without warning, love
Bears heavy on my mind

Then I look at you
And the world’s alright with me
Just one look at you
And I know it’s gonna be
A lovely day
… lovely day, lovely day, lovely day …

When the day that lies ahead of me
Seems impossible to face
When someone else instead of me
Always seems to know the way

Then I look at you
And the world’s alright with me
Just one look at you
And I know it’s gonna be
A lovely day…

Not only does this song relate to your own personal struggles but to the social injustices of our time. #blacklivesmatter But just as you get weighed down by your circumstances, he hits you with the hope.

Life is a roller coaster but no matter what’s going on, there is always hope. It’s all in your perception. Envision all the love that surrounds you be it romantic or familial. Who makes you smile? It doesn’t even have to be a person, it can be a happy place or space in time.

So my good people, go forth and not only have a Lovely Day but have a Lovely Life.
