Social Media: A Blessing and A Curse

All of us has fallen victim the guilty pleasure that is named Social Media.  I know it was popping this past weekend after the Super Bowl.  We have all shared a meme, hit the like button, double tapped, used a hashtag, and the list goes on and on.  It is amazing how far technology has come which plays a huge role in the social media game. I started college in 2001 and the most exciting things about cell phones at the time was the snake game.  Side Note:  I am glad that social media was not as big as it is now.  My friends and I had some silly moments in college and I am grateful no one has proof of those moments. Now back to the blessing and curse of social media.  Technology today has made our huge world seem very small.  I can post a picture on Facebook and immediately share this image with my family and friends. I can write this blog post and immediately receive feedback from around the world.  I am able to stay connected to friends who live halfway around the world. Many people have started a career from their social media posts.

But on the flip side we have allowed social media to take away the simple pleasures of having a face to face conversation with another.  People can end up losing an entire work day checking various social media account.  A person can make one honest mistake it becomes the hottest tending Instagram or Vine video that gets shared a million times over. People live in a virtual world and no longer have skills set to interact with people.  Social media also helps people to become internet bullies.

Everyone has a personal responsibility to use social media wisely.  Don’t let social media take over your world.  Challenge yourself to unplug from social media from time to time. It is amazing what you see when you are not looking down at your phone.
