i’d like to share a few thoughts on social media. Let me start by saying I only use one site at the moment, so my experience is limited to that particular site. I barely know what Snapchat and Twitter are, so let me start with those. I don’t have a clue what Tumblr is, so it’s safe for now.
*Snapchat-If you want to make sure what you just typed or posted immediately disappears… Then just don’t say it. Your secret is safe with you…unless you’re prone to drunk texting or you’re a blabber mouth. Then you are screwed.
*Twitter-I can barely answer a yes or no question in 140 characters. If that’s all you have to say, Great! To those of you who engage in Twitter fights, (a la Kanye and Wiz). Grow up! You have beef with a friend, call your friend and hash it out. You have beef with some fool you don’t even know, stop following said person. Never, ever tweet @saidperson, and in general mind your own blasted business.
Now to you, my dear fellow Facebook users: Stop it! With your poor grammar and bad spelling. Stop it with the stupid like and comment games. You pranksters who post fake news stories so that your friends can be “owned” are ridiculous…but worse than you are those people who post fake news who don’t know it’s fake. Read before you post, please. And since we’re on the subject of reading, if Facebook is your primary source for news, please unfriend me immediately.
Speaking of unfriending, if you have 400 friends you’re a celebrity, and need a fan page. Those people are not your friends. Also if we have never met in real life, do not send me a friend request. If we have met in real life, and you actually like me, then a request is fine, but if we’ve known each other for 20 years but we do not have anything in common, do not bother requesting my friendship. I will not accept. I don’t care how many friends you have incommon. I do not care if you “follow” me. We are not friends in real life. We will not be friends in virtual reality.
Speaking of virtual reality, stop pretending to be someone on Facebook that does not match up with who you really are. It confuses the crap out of me. Also, please update your profile pic. Do not use a picture that is 10 years old, when you were bald and in a suit and tie, especially if you’re currently sporting locs and wear dashikis to the office. Again, it confuses me.
Finally, I would like to say thank you to those who use social media responsibly. I love how you promote your businesses and champion your causes. I appreciate your thoughtfulness and your willingness to share with the rest of us. You are few and far between.
TBH, I wish there were more people like you.
