Taking the high road is a lesson my parents, and especially my dad, taught me early on. Anyone can follow the road that’s easy and wide and lends itself to popular opinion or what feels right. It’s much harder to take the high road which can be difficult because it goes against what our flesh and feelings want to do.

The wide road or the easy road has daily traps that seek to ensnare us. It seeks to incite our mouth to have the last say or to slam that door in someone’s face. It happens to the best of us. But what happens when we take the high road?

We ignore a lot of things and put our feelings under subjection. We do like Paul said and we walk according to the spirit and not according to the lust of the flesh. The flesh will ALWAYS be drawn to evil or the things that go against what God has for us.

When we take the high road and do what’s right for the sake of doing what’s right, we become the better person. It may be very uncomfortable or difficult at the moment but if we can ever learn this valuable lesson, it leads to a much happier life. We experience more peace and less drama. Every conversation doesn’t need a response, especially if it’s one in the heat of the moment. Some things are better left unsaid. You might be surprised how different you feel the next day after relaxing and releasing the situation.

In 2016, word to the wise: don’t allow drama to feed your soul. Don’t answer or respond to every negative thought. Don’t dish out what someone dished out to you. Don’t retaliate. Don’t hate. Don’t give in to your feelings or fleshly desires. Take a fresh breath…a moment to still your soul and take the high road! You’ll thank yourself in the morning.
