What’s Happening Wednesday: Sweet Surrender

Oh, Oh, Oh yeah!

I surrender all…

The church choir sings an updated version of this old hymn.  The whole congregation sways, rocks, claps  and sings along.  Everybody hits their notes.  Everybody is in rhythm.  Except for me.  I am praying earnestly with every note.

I mean, I like the new version.  I really do, but there is something about the verses that gets me.

All to Jesus, I surrender.

All to Him I freely give.

I will ever love and trust him.

In his presence daily live.

All to Jesus, I surrender.

Humbly at his feet I bow.

Worldly treasures all forsaken

Take me Jesus, take me now.

And I start praying.  Lord, I surrender all.  I give over to you all of my gifts and talents.  You gave them to me for a reason.  So when I write, sing, dance, speak, whatever i find myself doing,  I submit to your will.

I surrender all.  Because even the little bit I thought I had under control is really controlling me.  My money, my diet, my relationships, even my time.  So Lord, I’m going to hand these things over to you.  They were yours in the first place.  Help me to use each of them to bring glory to you.

I surrender all.  Because even the little bit I thought I had under control is really controlling me.  My money, my diet, my relationships, even my time.  So Lord, I’m going to hand these things over to you.  They were yours in the first place.

I surrender all…Because I know there are times that it appears we are at war.  What I want and what you want for me, what you have already prepared for me do not always match.  I know that my resistance is futile (for my Trekkies). You are bigger, stronger, wiser.

So I surrender, because I have to…but there is more to it now.  Now I find myself surrendering because I want to.  I am waving the little white flag, in order that the blood-stained banner fly high.  That’s the flag i want people to see.
