TITLE: MAX AXIOM SUPER SCIENTIST SERIES

AUTHOR: LIAM O’DONNELL

ILLUSTRATOR: VARIOUS

DESCRIPTION:

The Max Axiom series a bold step forward in science literacy. The central character, Max, is an accomplished scientist and engineer who happens to be African American. He confidently uses his smarts to figure out complex problems while leading the reader down a path filled with excitement and learning opportunities.

WHY I LIKE THIS BOOK:

I have always believed that there is a strong and supportive tie between literacy and science inquiry. I love this series because it is beautifully illustrated and content rich in vocabulary and themes that excite science learning. We have had readers for young adults and children for some time that convey science concepts; however, many of those books did not visually depict the central characters as intelligent, confident people of color. Those of us who have studied child development and served as teachers know and understand the value of being able to present our students with diverse, visual and culturally-competent literature to help prepare them for living in our world. Max Axiom is one of the heroes that are here to help.
