Unless you’ve been under a rock, you’ve more than likely heard Adele’s latest single, “Hello”. It’s amazing, of course. This young lady is incredibly talented. She might very well be the voice of her generation, which is why I’m concerned.
First there was “Someone Like You”. Now “Hello”.
I understand the sentiment. I mean, who doesn’t? Which of us hasn’t wanted to call up an old flame and hash out what went wrong, or reminisce about the good old days? Or demand an apology for the hell they put you through? I know I have a couple who owe me at least that.
I have wanted to make that phone call so many times. Thank God I never did.
Here’s why:
- There are a couple who don’t know that they broke my heart and I will never give them that power!
2. The ones who know and have not yet said “I’m sorry” are in no hurry to apologize. I have had the same email since the invention of e-mail. My mother has had the same address for my whole life. Her phone number has not changed. If you call her house and ask for me, they will take a message, if not give you my number directly. Granted, if you broke my heart, she probably doesn’t like you… So I might not get the message for a few weeks. But eventually she’d crack and tell me that you called.
3. They have all moved on.
4. So have I. Thirteen years into my marriage, and 3 children later, what happened between us in the 1990s should stay in the 1990s.
5. What didn’t kill me made me stronger. Yes. There were days right after our breakup that I thought I would not make it. But guess what? I was wrong. What we went through was part of the process to get me where I am now. So thank you to the ones that broke my heart. I could not have gotten here without you.
Should you have an Adele moment, and feel the need to call…do me a favor. Write me a letter. Drop it in the mail, but don’t put a stamp on it. In a few days when it returns to you, read it. If the sentiment remains, call me at my mom’s. I assure you by the time I get the message, the feeling will have passed.
Hello?
