As usual, I asked my kiddos what I should write about. As usual, their answer was superheroes. And as usual, they were absolutely right. Today, as a nation we celebrate the sacrifices of those who serve or who have served in our nation’s military.
Both my grandfathers served in the Army. My daddy was a Vietnam veteran. My big brother served in Desert Storm and the love of my life served 4 years in the U.S. Navy.
While the free meals and drinks are appreciated, there is so much more we can do to support our heroes. We can make sure they have the absolute best health care available. We can make sure they have homes and jobs to return to once their tours of duty have ended. We can support veterans’ causes and charities. We can offer helping hands to the military spouses and children whose sacrifices often go unnoticed.
If you see someone selling Buddy Poppies today, drop a few coins in the jar. I like to use them as bookmarks. If you run into a group of vets enjoying their discounted meals, thank them for their service. Listen to their stories.
I love Iron Man as much as the next girl. But I grew up surrounded by real life superheroes. I count myself as one lucky lady.
Thank you to the men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces. We can never repay you. But we can honor you…today and every day.
