So, for the month of November, I will be sharing excerpts from the novel that I am attempting to write for NaNoWriMo. Let me say that this is challenging, especially on days like today where I have absolutely nothing to write, but know that I need to keep up my pace. I’m sorry that my post is so late in the day, but I had a hard time narrowing down what I wanted to share. I hope that you all enjoy this from Chapter 8.

…………

“But Dad”, Athens protested, “there must be something we can do. I just got you back. I need you! How can I lead them? I can’t even fight back!”

“YOU MUST GO! Don’t let my sacrifice be in vain. You are the hope of our people, the strongest of us all!” came his voice again.

Athens looked at him and tears ran in torrents down her face. She knew he was right. His breathing had become labored. She knew that he only had a few seconds of life left in him.

“I love you Athens!”, came her father’s voice one last time.

Athens watched, sorrow threatening to overwhelm her. She was still in the clutched of the tendrils from the soldiers, but the Captain was watching in glee as her father gasped, jerked, and then collapsed for good. He let out a laugh that Athens knew she would never forget. As he was about to turn around and address the rest of Athens’ family, he quickly shifted his stance back to Athens’ father’s body. It was pulsing. Light began streaming not just from the hole in his chest, but from his eyes, mouth and nostrils. The soldiers shifted uncomfortably, but the Captain just stood there and watched. The light grew brighter and brighter, not accompanied by a shrill sound that Athens remembered. She was dimly aware of her family phasing out quickly, and beckoning her to do the same during this diversion, but she stayed. She had to see. When her father’s body finally combusted, the soldiers disintegrated instantly in the power of his bright light. The Captain shielded his eyes, but Athens could also see his body begin to phase uncontrollably. She also smelled the burning of his flesh. When the brightness subsided, The Captain thrashed around, blinded temporarily. Athens, now free, prepared to phase out, but before she did, she made sure that she was inside of the Captain’s mind and said simply,

“I WILL kill you!”
