I LOVE my family. These people are my inspirations and my aspirations. They are my supporters and my critics. They really do mean more to me than my feeble words can express, but here is my attempt:
Fun. When my family gets together, I can assure you there will be laughter (even at funerals.) We honestly enjoy each other’s company. Whether it’s a random midweek visit, or our annual Kwanzaa celebration, there are a few things you can count on. Someone will do an impression of another family member. Someone will be pouring libations (and someone will be partaking). And more than likely, someone will be dancing (that happens at funerals too.)
Faith. My family is not monolithic in their beliefs. There are Christians, Muslims, agnostics, and some whose beliefs cannot be summed up in a single word. I honor them for that… But that’s not what I mean. I’m not referring to faith in divine, but faith in each other. I trust them to be who they have shown themselves to be. Our family is a safe place to be who you are. There is no walking on eggshells or hiding your emotions. You get to be your authentic self. And we as a family, will support the real you.
Fight. It’s not all peaches and cream.Sometimes there is yelling and cussing. Sometimes things get broken (bones included). We fight hard because we love hard. But as hard as we fight against each other, We also fight for each other. We also have an unbelievable compactly to Forgive.
Forever. The family bond never ends. It doesn’t matter whether you live overseas, or if you’ve chosen to temporarily ex-communicAte yourself…we still love you. Family is forever.
