“A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest and poverty shall come upon you like a thief and scarcity like an armed man.” Proverbs 6:10-11

This scripture literally disturbed my rest yesterday. I laid down for all of two seconds and this scripture popped in my head. So I hopped right out of bed and got back to work.

Poverty frightens me as much as snakes… And that’s saying a lot.

I could bore you with poverty statistics. I could paint a pitiful picture of what it’s like to live in lack. I will not. I will simply say that being poor is NOT fun.

And I don’t know of you’ve heard, but here in the Sunflower State, we aim to actually criminalize fun if you’re poor. Seriously, if you receive state aid there will be no surf and turf, no casinos, and no swimming. As if poverty in and of itself isn’t scary enough, let’s throw in the threat of jail time.

For the next few weeks, I’ll be blogging about money. Bear in mind that my knowledge of the subject is limited, because I don’t have much of it. But I’m hoping that someday I will and when I get it, I’d like to know what to do with it.

I do not need to sleep on pillowcases stuffed with dollar bills…but I would like to be able to take a nap without fearing that poverty is lurking around every corner waiting for an opportunity to pounce.

  1. Oh I like this, but I’m going to challenge this interpretation a little bit. This is one of those scriptures I’d argue has to be considered within the full context of the Proverbs story. This lesson is a warning against putting yourself into an indebted situation. It goes on to give guidance on how to get out of that indebted situation if you find yourself there by encouraging hard work and smart planning. There are many scriptures in the Bible that discourage us from taking on debt and living beyond our means because it puts us in vulnerable and compromising situations with other people. To me this is not a scripture to pull out and whoop hard working people with at all. It is the beginning of a strategic plan to get out of the hole and back on solid ground. I’m looking forward to how this conversation will develop.
