Sometimes, it’s hard to find the words.

To say I’m sorry.
To comfort a grieving friend.
To that hymn the church is singing.

Sometimes…
But that doesn’t mean you don’t try
To apologize
To wipe a loved one’s tears
To sing along anyway.

When the words don’t seem like enough let your actions speak for you.
Live like you learned your lesson.
Lend a listening ear.
And hum along as best you can.

Because sometimes the words are hard to find…
For all of us

Today is one of those days for me. There are so many of you I’d love to encourage. I see you pursuing your passions, teaching your children to be awesome human beings. I see you fighting for justice. I see you making a difference in the world. You give me hope in my darkest days.

Still there are others of you whose hearts are broken. I watch silently as you grieve tremendous losses. I’d give anything to be able to ease your sorrow. My heart hurts for you. My heart hurts with you. I wish I had the words, but today they escape, like uncontrolled tears from downcast eyes.

And for those of you, who like me, is on a different page in the hymnal than the rest of the congregation, please know that you are not alone. Just keep singing.

On days when the words are hard to find, keep living… But keep searching. Because eventually, the words will be apparent… And on that day, you’ll be ready to have your way with them.
