The holiday season is upon us. I have already decided which pair of leggings I’m wearing to Thanksgiving dinner and the Christmas gifts I ordered last week should be arriving any day now.
For the first time in years, I’m actually excited about the holidays. I don’t expect it will be much different than last year. We’ll go to the same place, eat the same food and recycle those same old decorations.
But this year feels different.
I can’t quite put my finger on it. Maybe, it’s because this election was so hard on all of us. The holidays are a welcome distraction from the reality TV show of American politics.
Maybe, it’s because the garbage that normally fills our social media feeds will be replaced with pictures of full plates of food and family photos.
Maybe, just maybe, all of us will be kindler, gentler versions of ourselves. At least for a few weeks, we’ll be too busy stuffing ourselves silly to lash out at one another.
Let’s spread holiday cheer like butter on a homemade roll.
Let’s coexist, like the creatures in my daddy’s seafood gumbo. We’ve all got our own distinct flavors, but when we all get together, we are even more amazing.
Let’s rest a while, like the turkey before you carve it.
Let’s be sugary sweet, like peach cobbler, pecan pie, and red velvet cake.
Let’s be thankful for it all.
I need to make sure my leggings have enough give in the waistband.
