I have a confession to make.  I talk to myself.  I always have.  When I was a child, I made up whole soap operas for me and my imaginary friends.  My best imaginary friend was the daughter of a wealthy record label executive. She had the coolest things and she gave the best advice!

My self-talk isn’t quite that imaginative any more, though it does quite often mirror that of a cartoon character.  No, I’m not talking about anything you’ve seen on Adult Swim.  Think more like Finding Nemo.  Remember Dory.  “Just keep swimming.  Just keep swimming.”  It’s my latest mantra.

The world has gone topsy-turvy.  Violence is the norm.  Polite society is nearly non-existent.  Social media has added makeup filters, but removed our sense of civility towards one another.  There are days when I just have no desire to deal with the rest of the world.  But I’m a grown-up, and I know that’s impossible.  So I pull up my big girl pants, say a few words of thanksgiving , and then a word or two to myself.

Sometimes it’s Biblical. “The Lord is my light, and my salvation; whom shall I fear?,”(Psalm 27:1) and “Blessed is she who believed, for there will be a fulfillment of those things which were told her from the beginning. (Luke 1:46 is my favorite Bible verse).  Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.  On those days, I sing hymns and pray my way through the muck and mire that is every day.

But on other days, I am a little less spiritual.  Sometimes my self-talk sounds more like Beyoncé.

“I’m a keep runnin’ cause a winner don’t quit on themselves.”

On those days, I put on my “Six-Inch Heels” tell myself I’m “Flawless” and I “Run the World”!

I slay, honey and there is not a soul who can tell me otherwise.

Now, for those of you who think it is inappropriate for me to mix my party with my piety, I understand your objection. You should know that I don’t wear my club clothes to church.  (I don’t even own club clothes!)  I generally don’t quote Queen Bey in the prayer circle.  I use her words to motivate me to get out and do what I know the King has ordained me to do.

If you still have a problem with my use of Beyoncé and The Bible to motivate myself, I have a few words for you.

“Boy, Bye.”  I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

P.S. And Yes, I could have gone with Donald Lawrence’s “Encourage Yourself” video, but what is the fun in that!

P.P.S Because I love you,
