I was in the middle of an intersection and my car stopped.  It slowly lost power until it wouldn’t move.  I had run out of gas!  I never saw the gas light come on and I assumed I had enough gas to get to the next stop.  I misjudged that!  In the middle of the intersection, I waved to the guy behind me to come around because I clearly couldn’t go anywhere.  All three of my kids were in the car and I began to think, how are we going to get to the gas station which fortunately, was a few feet away.  The guy behind me got out of the car and offered to push my car out of the intersection.  I was thankful, but I was still wondering how we were going to get to the gas station and how late we were going to be getting to the library’s book club meeting.  The guy pushed the car out of the way and another guy came up and offered to help.  Together, they pushed my car to the station (along with the help of my girls).  We made it to the station and all was well!

Of course there are several lessons I learned, but the main one is how grateful I am to the men who didn’t know me, but offered to help.  I was reminded of the commandment “Love your neighbor as yourself…” They showed love in action.  I’m sure they had other things to do and didn’t really want to push a car on a warm September day, but they did.  They inconvenienced themselves for a few minutes to help me– a total stranger.  How many times do we inconvenience ourselves for a total stranger?  That is what the Bible calls us to do.  How much different would our world be if each of us did an act of kindness or shared true love on a daily basis?  We could all change the world through LOVE.
