What color is daddy?  Brown like chocolate.

What color are you.  “I’m more of a caramel color.”

What color is mommy? Orange!!

And the whole house erupts into laughter.

i have been the butt of this joke sense my almost-10-year old (OMG, she’s almost 10!) could speak.

I laugh, too!  It’s hilarious.  As someone who has struggled trying to define and describe my look, I have to tell you, “orange” never entered my mind.  I’ve tossed out phrases like “cafe au lait” and more, recently, “peanut butter”.

But my kids, in their infinite imaginations, are not limited in describing skin tones to black and white, or various shades of brown.  They see the world in full color, and it’s a beautiful thing.

Besides, orange is one of my favorite colors.  It reminds me of sunrises and summer fruits.  And it’s my favorite flavor of SweeTart and Pixy Stick. My absolute favorite candy, comes in an orange package (Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, if you would like to get me treat).

Besides that, what kind of sick twisted soul says,” I hate orange people.” There are certain orange people who have made the news of late, who are giving the rest of us a bad name, but in general, we are kind, gentle souls who are just trying to get through life the best way we know how.

I guess Orange really is the New Black!
