I ran across this blog post from an older blog a few days ago. It has really resonated with me, especially in the stage of life that my wife and I find ourselves in at the moment. We are dreaming like crazy. As a result, this is a very curious blog to just have found. I hope that you all enjoy!
Yes, this is our new series at church. Now, if any of you have really read my blogs, you know that this is something that I am definitely interested in. I’m not a big dreamer, but I always wonder about my destiny and have gone through several revisions as I have gotten older. In the first sermon, Pastor Gene said something that I think is very dynamic. He said that our dreams are not always our destinies. Wait! Say what, Pastor? Why would God give us dreams if they would not necessarily be our destinies? What is the purpose of dreams anyway?
We are using the story of Joseph as an illustration for all of this. If you can remember, Joseph had several dreams relating to his family bowing down to him, and his eagerness to share this dream began his process of achieving his destiny. But if we look at the end result, the dreams of Joseph were not ultimately God’s destiny. God didn’t necessarily have in mind for Joseph’s kin to bow to him. God’d destiny for Joseph was that he would save a nation. Now in light of Joseph’s dream, how small does that seem against the destiny that God had in mind for him? I mean, if someone told me today that I had a destiny like that, I would completely forget about my dreams. Those are small potatoes.
In fact, without Joseph having those dreams, its quite possible that he would never have achieved his destiny. After hearing a couple of sermons from this series, I am convinced that God gives us dreams as a means of spurring us toward our destiny. He means for us to nurture these dreams, and give them back to him for accomplishing. By nuturing dreams, I mean that we take care to incubate them. We can’t share our dreams with everyone. Some people will not understand the dream and will respond in the same way that Joseph’s brothers responded; by throwing us in a pit. Yet even in the pit, God can still do miraculous things. God’s destiny for us is so much greater than our dreams, that it can withstand harmful intent by others, because God’s destiny is his handprint on our lives. It is His spoken word for our lives, and the Bible says that His word will never return to Him void, buit that it will accomplish what He has intended for it to accomplish.
So what does this all mean for us? Quickly, it means hold on to your dreams, but not to the point that you clutch it closer to your breast than finding out your destiny. God can show you prosperity via your dreams, but He accomplishes that prosperity through your destiny. I’m in the same boat as you. I used to have dreams, but I continually let life steal them away from me. I’ve been through some seasons where I felt like my destiny had been abandoned. But God is the Dream Giver, and the Destiny Achiever. He is able to ressurect the bones of dried and shrivelled up dreams, and flesh them out in such a way before our eyes that we will marvel. He is able to show us our destinies, and then hold us up when we faint at the magnitude of what God wants to accomplish through us for His glory. He is God. I’ll hit this some more later on this week. But for now, let’s pray.
“God, we want what you want for our lives. Forgive us for being lackadaisical with the dreams that you have given us, for not having the faith to believe that you care enough to see us succeed, and for letting life and people drain the energy from our dreams. Forgive us for placing more emphasis on our dreams than considering the part that they play in Your ultimate goal for us. From this point on God, give us dreams and we will nurture them. Accomplish your will through us, and we will respond in obedience. Thank you God for everything that You are. Amen”
I confess with faith that we will see our destinies realized. God is going to bring things forth that will astound us and the world. The world will know that our God reigns!
Until next time, family, be blessed.
