What I fear most in the church today is that entertainment value is beginning to outweigh the value of simplicity. I’m no foe of glitz and glamour. I believe that is sometimes how we get people to stay and listen to the message of the Kingdom of God, but I also believe that we should vary those times, staggering them between times of simple, vertical worship. Then again, everyone has their own preference. I guess, I’m just asking these questions of myself first. Is the simple knowledge of His presence enough to cause me to worship Him? Do I need special lighting, or complex harmonies? Can i recognize Him apart from goosebumps?

If no strobe lights were flashing,
And the videos were gone..
Could you find Him in worship?
Would your heart light be on?
If the band was just one…
Or guitar and a voice
Would our generations still rise?
Would they still make that choice?
If the production was muted,
And the message was shortened
And the things that drain our attentions
Were immediately aborted,
Would we short Him what’s His?
Withhold what He desires?
Without all of the noise
Would we still have that fire?
I submit to you, Church
And I beg from my core
That maybe stripping down to basics
Giving simply gives Him more?
Rich harmonies are great..
So is that guitar solo…
But if we need those to worship,
Then our worship is a no-go.
See, worship is simple…
His presence abounds
All we must do it listen
And respond to His sound
Don’t get caught in the traps
That Sunday mornings should entertain.
We come humbly and excitedly
Simply to praise His Holy name.
We delight in His Love
As our hearts are rearranged
And our minds get transformed
So our lives can be changed.
Take it back to the basics
Remember what it’s about.
Rediscover the true heart of worship…
Then let thanks flow from our mouths.
