AUTHOR: BEBE MOORE CAMPBELL
ILLUSTRATOR: E.B. LEWIS

When a parent’s mental illness puts a child at risk what can you do? Read this book for ideas on a survival toolkit for kids.

WHY I LIKE THIS BOOK: I once conducted a bibliotherapy workshop for social workers and used this book as a key example of survival strategies for children who have to fend for themselves. I learned a lot that day about just how dire these circumstances can become. Bebe Moore Campbell tells an all too familiar story of the defenseless victims of mental illness-young children. Her story however is not one of defeat but of realism and pragmatic approaches that build hope, confidence and the strength to survive despite the challenges. This honest and thoughtful text is further enhanced by the warm and moving illustrations of E. B. Lewis. I believe you will discover opportunities to educate and empower adults and children alike through this story about hope, resilience and the keys to survival for a better day!
