This month, marks the sixth month of my group blog writing journey! I was asked to join thewriteaddiction and excitedly accepted. I accepted the weekly writing position to discipline myself to write. When I think back, I’ve always enjoyed writing and communicating my thoughts on paper (or the computer), but it’s one of those hobbies that gets placed on the back burner because there are so many other irons in the fire. I decided to make a commitment to being a better writer and thewriteaddiction has afforded me the opportunity to do so. It has allowed me to share thoughts about my dad’s passing last October, pay tribute to some special people in my life including my mom and husband, and bring up some more controversial issues such as the state of education in Mississippi (my state of residence). Through it all, I’ve enjoyed sharing pieces of my life and heart with an audience willing to listen and even offer comments and dialogue.

Lessons I’ve learned:

  1. There are many things we can do if we make time and exercise discipline.
  2. Sometimes we have to be our own cheerleader and go for it!
  3. There will be days when you won’t feel like writing or doing whatever you committed to but always be a person of your word and do it.
  4. Someone is benefitting from your gift so use it and use it well.
  5. Never underestimate the power of words. When used correctly, they bring life, healing, help and inspiration.
  6. Reading and writing go hand in hand. You will never surpass the level of your learning which, in many cases, comes in the form of reading.
  7. We make time for our priorities. If it’s important to us, we find a way to do it.

Take some time today and invest in yourself and your hobbies. Make time to do what’s important to you. Let go of time wasters and do something that will replenish, refresh and restore YOU. You are worth it.
