When I was A little girl, I watched various types of shows that had positive messages about different careers.  The postman was your friend and so was the fireman, policeman, garbageman, grocery man, Librarian, etc.  When career day came around, we looked forward to it with excitement because we got a chance to learn about different careers.  Of course when it was all over, we were asked, “What do you want to be when you grow up?”  There were a whole lot of answers given by my classmates.

My dad was a minister and a school guidance counselor.  My mom was a stay at home mom raising 9 kids.  I did not want to be a fireman because I was afraid of heights and going up in that ladder was not happening.  I did not want to be a police officer because it was too dangerous.  I did not want to be a nurse because it was not as exciting as being the doctor plus it would take a lot of math to be a doctor and I was/am not good at math.  I had an idea of what I wanted to be and I knew exactly why.  I was going to be a soldier.  Why?  BECAUSE I LIKED THE HATS THAT THE MALE SOLDIERS WORE.

Now, clearly this was not a sufficient reason to enter an occupation where I could get killed.  But I told my Dad and he said that it was cute that I wanted to be a soldier.  He never discouraged me and yet he never encouraged me to pursue that career.  Eventually, that idea faded, as did many others as I grew.  I am thankful that my father did not try to squelch that momentary interest.  Allow your children to dream and explore various careers.  Do not allow your prejudice to taint the spirit of exploration that lives in the minds of our children.   Let them be a butcher, baker, candle stick maker.   A clown, bull fighter, singer, dancer.  Let them dream.

If you have lost your dream, find it again.   Remember that life it too short to get caught up in the foolishness so go out and have a FUNKADELIC FRIDAY!!!
