What’s Happening Wednesdays: It’s Above Me Now

Have you seen the video of the brother at the hotel who very gently refused services to a would-be guest after she called him out of his name?

If not, check it out. https://youtu.be/dOpd10lffm4

There are so many things I love about this video.  First, the brother never raises his voice.  Anybody who has ever worked in customer service knows that it can be difficult to keep your cool when situations get hot. I can hardly think of a hotter situation than a face to face encounter with somebody who disrespected you.

Secondly, I love how this young man keeps his hands in clear view of the camera at all times.  This serves as both a safety precaution and pure entertainment.  The woman on the other side of this encounter will not have the opportunity to say he was gesturing obscenities, or threatening her with his body language.  As far a entertainment, it’s as beautiful as a well choreographed dance.  It’s one thing to say that the situation is over his head, but when he actually lifts his hands above his shoulders to indicate that this situation was no longer in his purview, I let out a hearty chuckle.

Finally, and most importantly, I love that the video cut off when it did.  It leaves the ending up to our  individual imaginations.  I know  some of you can see this poor lady trekking her way to the Best Western next door, and while that is exactly what she deserves, I imagine that this scene plays out differently. I imagine this young man takes pity on the grieving woman and grants her a room despite her rude behavior.

This young man is an example of how we all ought to handle conflict.

1) State the facts.  The hotel worker  made it clear.  The lady said this terrible thing.  The gentleman heard it and was offended.  As a result, her access was denied.

2)  Turn it over to the highest authority.  I don’t know if this hotel worker went to his supervisor or directly to Jesus, but this response was perfect in both the physical and spiritual realms.

3) Point the offender in the right direction.  In this case, I imagine this lady, in her grief, realized she had made a terrible mistake.  She probably did have to humble herself and contact the nearby Best Western,  but I also think this encounter left this lady doing some serious soul-searching.  She probably had to have a “Come to Jesus Meeting” with herself.  I’m not sure she would have gotten there, without help from this young guide.

If by chance, you come across an offense today, let this man be an example to you.

Give it to somebody above you.

  1. Consequences and repercussions for our actions. Yes, lawd! Ima need for folks to stop acting like it doesn’t matter what we say and how we treat people. You are right, this young man handled that situation.
